What is the difference between TFN and ABN?

The TFN is unique number that requires to manage tax affairs including generating income and lodging to ATO. An Australian Business Number (ABN) is an 11-digit number that identifies your business to the government and community and is used for tax and business purposes.

Do I need an ABN?

If you are doing business, answer is yes but not everyone requires an ABN to generate income. You may need an ABN for various reasons, including the following:

  • To get business name and operate business.
  • Having an ABN in your invoices/website looks more legitimate. It also provides an easy way for your clients to confirm your business by searching an ABN lookup.
  • To register for GST or PAYG (Note: If the company expects to turnover $74,999 per year it will need to be registered for GST).
  • To open account you will require an ABN in addition to an ACN.

What information will I require to register an Australian Business Name?

You will need to have a ABN, personal details (Name, DOB and TFN), an email address, Full residential address and place of business address.

Should I apply for an ABN or business name first?

You can apply ABN and later business name or do both together.

Can I use my registered business name to create a company in the future?

Subject to availability of registered business name you can create company later. You can also transfer your business name to new company to sale to other.

Does registering a business name also trademark the name?

No. Registered for Trademark has different process (www.ipaustralia.gov.au). You can also apply to trademark your name via the IP Australia website.

Can I register more than one business name?

You can register many business names, but each business name has be to separate application. ASIC will provide you certificate of business name via email.

Are certain names restricted by ASIC for use as business names?

Yes, you sure can! As your business needs change, you can change the legal status of your business by visiting our online platform, EasyCompanies.

You will not be able to register a certain business name if:

  • It is already in use by a registered company or business – this includes a spelling and/or pronunciation test
  • It is offensive and/or suggestive of illegal activity
  • It suggests a misleading connection with the government, royal family or ex-serviceman’s association
  • It is a word that requires approval from a government agency or Minister, i.e. University, Building Society, Trust, Chartered etc.

Can I change my business name at a later stage?

No, you cannot change an existing business name. In order to trade with a different name you must register a new business name.

Yes, you must update by contacting ASIC or from ASIC connect or contacting us. Service fee may apply
